Anawilundawa

Situated a mere 500 meters away from the Chilaw -> Puttlam highway, it's amazing that the Anawilundawa wetland sanctuary is hardly known to those other than hardcore bird lovers.

To reach Anawilundawa, turn left from the Chilaw -> Puttlam highway at the Anawilundawa village (approximately 10kms away from Bangadeniya) and travel about 500 meters till you reach the sanctuary.

Declared a Ramsar Wetland Sanctuary in 2001, Anawilundawa consists of 7 interconnected reservoirs built way back in the time of Parakramabahu the Great in the 12th century.

A haven for bird lovers, Anawilundawa is also the perfect place to take a break and enjoy mother nature's creations on your way to more northern parts of the country. If you are able to get your hands on a bicycle, there can be no better way of enjoying this environment than cycling around the reservoirs and the forest patches oblivious to the fact that a main highway and railway line is just a few meters away.

This place is just too beautiful for words to describe it, so I am just going to let the pictures do the talking...
